Geodon generic name ziprasidine belongs to the family of antipsychotic medication which function by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain. It is used to treat schizophrenia as well as the manic symptoms of bipolar disorder known as manic depression in adults and as well as children who are at least 10 years old.
Do not drink alcohol when using this drug as the side effects may be greatly increased.
At this time the medical community defines moderate consumption of alcohol as no more than two drinks per day and no more than 14 drinks per week. Anything more than that is considered an unhealthy dependency on alcohol that may have adverse social, family and health consequences.
If a person drinks only once or twice a week but drinks on the same days each week and more than two drinks this is considered as an alcohol dependency.
If a person binge drinks at any time during the week this is also considered as alcoholism.
Some consider alcoholism as a disease while others consider it an addiction which is the result of personal choice and character fault. This school of thought blames the alcoholism on life style choices.
Personally I consider alcoholism a genetic tendency as I have seen families of alcoholics even when they live far apart. These unfortunate people are probably dependent on alcohol from the first drink.
When alcohol interacts with prescription over the counter drugs it usually results in negative health effects most especially liver damage as the main organ affected.
Geodon is not to be used for patients suffering from Dementia as it may cause heart failure, sudden death or dementia, a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome, recently had a heart attack or uncontrolled heart failure.
Before taking this drug advise your physician if you are allergic to this or any other drug or substance, if you are pregnant, plan to be so or are breastfeeding, heart rhythm disorder, history of heart attack or stroke, bone marrow or blood dell disorder, low blood potassium or magnesium, diabetes, seizure or epilepsy, suicidal thoughts, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease, trouble swallowing, liver disease or kidney disease.
Side Effects
Less serious side effects are mild skin rash, anxiety, headache, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, muscle pain, twitching, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, runny or stuffed nose, cough, sore throat or weight gain. If these occur call your physician for advice.
Serious side effects are severe dizziness, light headed, faint, fast or pounding heartbeat, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, uneven heartbeats, fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips, tremor, muscle movements in the eyes, tongue, jaw or neck, agitation, hostility, confusion, increased thirst, increased urination, extreme hunger, penis erection that is painful or lasts 4 hours or longer. If these occur get emergency medical help.
