Focalin and Alcohol
Focalin generic name dexmethylphenidate belongs to a family of drugs which act as a mild stimulant to the central nervous system. It is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Symptoms of ADHD include continuing problem with moderate to severe distractibility, short attention span, hyperactivity, changing emotions and impulsive behavior. This medication is used as part of a encompassing treatment program that include psychological, educational and social measures.
Since Focalin is used in the treatment of children the consumption of alcohol is not a consideration.
Do not use Focalin if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days as life threatening side effects may occur.
Before taking this drug advise your physician if the patient is allergic to this or any other drugs or substances, if you have glaucoma, twitches, personal or family history of Tourette’s syndrome or if you have meaningful tension, agitation or anxiety, severe depression, history of mental illness, history of drug or alcohol abuse, seizures or epilepsy, high blood pressure, heart disease, heart rhythm concerns, congestive heart failure or a recent heart attack.
Side Effects
Less serious side effects are sleep problems, loss of appetite, upset stomach, restless, anxious, jittery, dry mouth, sore throat or headache. If these occur call your physician for advice.
Serious side effects are dangerous high blood pressure resulting in severe headache, blurred vision, ringing in your ears, chest pain, numbness, seizure, fast or uneven heart rate, blurred or any other vision problem, unusual behavior, confusion, twitching or tics. If these occur get emergency medical help.
