Ciprofloaxin is an antibiotic which belongs to a family of drugs known as fluroquinolones which fight bacteria in the body and works by stopping the production of essential proteins needed by the bacteria to survive. It is used to fight varied types of bacterial infections and may also be used to prevent or retard anthrax after being exposed. It may also be used for purposes other than listed here.
The effects of Ciprofloaxin are unknown in pregnancy so it is advised that this be discussed with your physician.
It is important not to consume alcohol not even moderate drinking while using Ciprofloaxin as the effectiveness of the antibiotic will be greatly reduced. Also you should not consume dairy products or calcium fortified fruit juices or the same will happen.
At this time the medical community defines moderate consumption of alcohol as no more than two drinks per day and no more than 14 drinks per week. Anything more than that is considered an unhealthy dependency on alcohol that may have adverse social, family and health consequences.
If a person drinks only once or twice a week but drinks on the same days each week and more than two drinks this is considered as an alcohol dependency.
If a person binge drinks at any time during the week this is also considered as alcoholism.
Some consider alcoholism as a disease while others consider it an addiction which is the result of personal choice and character fault. This school of thought blames the alcoholism on life style choices.
Personally I consider alcoholism a genetic tendency as I have seen families of alcoholics even when they live far apart. These unfortunate people are probably dependent on alcohol from the first drink.
When alcohol interacts with prescription over the counter drugs it usually results in negative health effects most especially liver damage as the main organ affected.
Before starting Ciprofloaxin advise your physician if you are allergic to any ciprofloxacin medicines or if you are being treated with medication for a heart rhythm disorder, have a history of allergic reaction to an antibiotic, joint problems, myasthenia gravis, kidney or liver disease, epilepsy, seizures, diabetes, low levels of blood potassium or a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome.
Side effects
Less serious side effects are nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, feeling nervous, anxious, agitated, sleep problems or sensitive to light.If these occur call your physician for advice.
Serious side effects are dizziness, fainting, fast pounding heartbeat, pain and swelling near joints, watery or bloody diarrhea, confusion, hallucinations, depression, unusual thoughts or behavior, seizure, jaundice, dark urine, fever, weakness, changes in urination, easy brusing or bleeding, numbness, tingling, pain in the body, fever, sore throat, headache with blistering peeling or red skin rash or any skin rash. If these occur get emergency medical help.
